Atonement
I was thrilled when I heard they were making one of my favourite books, Atonement by Ian McEwan, into a movie. I recently saw it at the VIFF, and for once the film actually lived up to the book! It doesn't come out in theatres nationwide until December, but I highly recommend seeing it when it does...and in the meantime, read the book! It is truly one of the most captivating, moving stories I have ever read.

Factory Girl
An intoxicating look at the decadent and destructive life of Edie Sedgwick, muse to artist Andy Warhol in the 1960s..the film transports the viewer into the glamorous, but ultimately devestating world of Andy's factory, where he created not only art, but celebrity...which was perhaps a work of art in itself to him. An interesting look at the New York art scene in the 1960s, as well fabulous costume design, which is a reason in itself to watch it!

The Long Weekend!

Saturday night Stephanie had a bunch of people over for a BBQ to introduce us all to her friends Mitch and Bjorn who are here from Germany for a couple of weeks.

Later on we made the proverbial post-barbeque, late night OB outing...we can walk there from her house okay! That's my only excuse...
Candice, Olivia and I

Steph and her brother. Nice moves guys!!

After a bit of a late start Sunday morning, we went down to Granville Island to enjoy some Canada Day festivities, and then took the Aquabus to Yaletown to catch the last bit of the Jazz festival.
What a truly beautiful city we live in!
The last band of the night, which played a fantastic jazz-reggae fusion that had everyone dancing!

Summer Reading...

I just finished Michael Ondaatje's most recent novel, Divisadero, and was once again amazed by the writer's poignant, lyrical prose. In my estimation, no other contemporary writer surpasses Ondaatje in his powers of description, imagery, and imagination. He creates such rich characters...so complex in their humanity that at times I find myself falling in love, other times perplexed, or at times utterly repulsed, but in all cases always intrigued. Divisadero follows the lives of individuals in a family broken apart by tragedy, contemplates the power of memory, and instills in it's readers a profound understanding of the depth and transformative power of love, both familial and romantic. Beautifully written...I recommend this literary feat to anyone in search of a great summer read!
